On trying to predict the future

Trying to tell the future is an exercise in futility. So many times I talk with amazing, driven coaches who are facing a decision and don’t know where to begin. They’re asking themselves questions like, “which path will lead me to my ultimate goal,” “what if this doesn’t work out,“ or “which one of these will take me to where I want to be?”

And the answer to all of those question is a simple one: I have no idea.

And neither do you.

We fool ourselves into believing that we know what tomorrow is going to look like because our brains like that sense of security.

The truth of the matter, though, is that we really have NO idea what’s going to happen next, and no amount of thinking and ruminating and wondering is going to tell us what’s around the bend of ANY path that we’re thinking about walking down.

The more powerful question to ask is this: DO YOU WANT TO FIND WHO YOU ARE IF YOU DO THAT THING?

When someone is stuck in a “what if” question about the future I always like to reply, “I have no idea what’s going to happen. Let’s go find out.”
